Gillian Woollett is Chief Scientist at Engel & Novitt, LLP, a boutique law firm with a global client base, which develops and implements science-based solutions to resolve legal/regulatory and public policy issues affecting the biopharmaceuticals industry, involving specific and general matters relating to drugs, biologicals, medical devices, and genomics. Dr. Woollett leads a unique multi-disciplinary Team and applies her scientific, policy, and communications expertise developed across the breadth of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry in both domestic and international settings to devise strategic approaches to assist the law firm’s pharma and biotech clients in achieving their strategic business objectives.
Prior to joining Engel & Novitt, LLP, Dr. Woollett was Associate VP at PhRMA with responsibilities for all activities concerning biologics and biotechnology. In addition to other initiatives, she was publisher of the PhRMA “Genomics - a Global Resource” World Wide Web page. Subsequently, Dr. Woollett was appointed Vice President, Science and Regulatory Affairs, at the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), where she established and led a new Department to support BIO companies’ interactions with regulatory agencies in all aspects of their discovery, development, and manufacture of biotechnology-based medicines. She led BIO’s effort to ensure that follow-on biologics will be made to the same standards as innovator products and that all regulations will be based on sound science. Dr. Woollett also represented the biotech industry with the media, and she served as BIO’s voice on international, as well as domestic, regulatory and science issues. She provided a point of scientific interface with other academic and professional organizations, and published BIO’s web page for public information on all aspects of biotechnology at http://science.bio.org. Dr. Woollett earned her M.A. from the University of Cambridge, and D.Phil from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
