Jack Lord, M.D.
Senior Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer
Humana

Jack joined Humana in 2000, with responsibility for designing and leading innovative health plan products and processes that encourage and enable people to successfully navigate the health care system. With 16 years' experience in medical administration, Jack is also leading Humana's transformation into the country's most e-enabled health solutions company.

Jack created Humana's Innovation Center, a functional blend of product development, clinical strategy and support services (including pharmacy), research (including consumer research, outcomes research, and predictive science), and consumer experience engineering that is unique to the health benefits industry. Jack's belief in placing talented employees in a workplace that encourages exploration, discovery, and personal growth has led to industry-leading products, patent-pending innovations in predictive science, and an aggressive entrepreneurship generating revenue outside the health benefits industry through global business relationships.

Jack came to Humana from Health Dialog, a Boston-based Internet provider of health information to more than 5 million Americans. As president, Jack became a leader in e-enabled health care. Prior to Health Dialog, he served as chief operating officer of the American Hospital Association in Washington, D.C., executive vice president of Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland, and executive vice president of Sun Health in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A board-certified forensic pathologist, Jack has 21 years' experience in medical practice. He began his medical career in the U. S. Navy, where he spent 11 years on active duty, most recently as director of the Naval Medical Command's Quality Assurance Division in the Office of the Surgeon General. He also served as a consultant and surveyor for the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. Jack has authored many articles, abstracts and books on topics ranging from risk management and quality assurance to prostaglandin biosynthesis. In 2002, he received the Karen Coughlin Individual Disease Management Leadership Award from the Disease Management Association of America (DMAA), honoring his contributions to advancements in the care of the millions of U.S. citizens with chronic disease.

Jack's vision, leadership, and talent for change management have led to appointments to several national boards. As President of the Disease Management Association of America (DMAA) from 2001-2002, Jack led the organization to restructure its operations, significantly increase its membership and revenues and establish branches in Europe, Asia and Australia. Also in 2002, Jack began a three-year term on the National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality. This prestigious appointment places Jack among only 21 distinguished health care leaders lending advice to the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services

As a Director at TheraSense -- a leader in developing personal clinical self-monitoring devices that are simple and comfortable to use and deliver rapid results -- from 2003 to 2004, Jack helped shepherd the company through a period of rapid growth and ultimate acquisition by Abbott Laboratories in early 2004. Also in 2004, Jack was asked to become a Director of Stericycle, an innovative leader in health care infection control and compliance services that is positioning itself to diversify and globalize.
